Caribbean poker is a popular poker variant with rules similar to the rules of five card stud poker. Caribbean poker is not really a poker game because the players do not play against each other. It is an American casino game where each player plays against the bank. The main difference between caribbean poker and other poker games is that instead of playing against other players, you can play against the casino.
Since caribbean poker is a game where you play against the casino, there is no bluff associated with the game and it is more characterized by luck and chance than actual skills. Caribbean Poker is popular because it is relatively easy to learn. You bet, also called ‘ante’, and you and the bank get five cards each. Once you have seen your hand and the bank’s first card, you must either make a ‘call bet’ by increasing your bet by an amount equal to twice your original ante, or ‘surrender’, whereby the bank wins your ante.
Then it’s time for the showdown: If the bank does not have an ace and a king, then you get your bet back plus an amount equal to the ante. If the bank has ace and king or better, you win if your hand beats the bank. Caribbean poker is a relatively new game. The name of the game’s inventor is unknown, but it first appeared in the Caribbean in the 1980s, including on cruise ships between the Caribbean islands.
The game gives the casino a huge advantage. Even perfect gaming tactics, which are difficult to achieve on the terms of the casino, give the casino a 5.224% advantage. A simpler strategy where you increase when you have Ace-King-Jack-8-3 or better gives the house an advantage of 5.316%.
If the players cooperate, it is possible for them to gain an advantage over the casino, but exchanging information about the contents of your hand with other players is prohibited, so this is unlikely to be done successfully. Despite this, caribbean poker is still a popular game. Many players do not like the great advantage that the casino has, and therefore some casinos have added a progressive jackpot with the aim of attracting more players. Players wishing to go for the progressive jackpot must remember to do so after placing the ante.
